Shortbreakoffers.com
This travel website is designed to help travelers find a suitable hotel and make room reservations online. Visitors to the site are provided with several options to find a hotel of their choice, including pictures of the hotel & rooms. This site is a prime example of how our designers work with demanding customers.
The site is built upon the online hotel reservation system provided by superbreak.com which has a number of affiliate websites that are easy to use. In this instance, we stepped far beyond what typical publishers participating in the Superbreakoffers.com affiliate programme do. We integrated hotels' data directly from superbreakoffers.com to facilitate faster and easier hotel searches and reservation requests for users, instead of just displaying content feed from the merchant in an iFrame.
This project is a good example of diligent and durable design work to tackle an extremely fastidious customer.
It took over a month of design work and reconciliation before it was approved. The first design we presented for review was scheduler-styled with two colour gradations:
| Dark | and | Light |
The customer felt that the design was good but that they would not like to see their site in a scheduler view. We tried to convince the customer that a scheduler style is appropriate for sites in which people need an ordering system to organise visits. However, the customer still felt he would prefer a different format; so we provided him with a new design.
On seeing this design, the customer indicated that this is closer to the design he would like to see on the site. However, he didn't like the header and stated that they would like a side navigation menu. We therefore removed the bright color from the header and added a left side menu for them.
Our designer believed that at least one element has to resemble a datebook. However, since the original datebook concept was declined by the customer, our designer incorporated a hole for a bolt on the menu.
It seemed that the design was starting to fit the customer's criteria. The next step was to work on a suitable logo. Since the objective of the site is to enable users to quickly find the best place to stay to enjoy a good rest, we designed a logo that attempted to combine these two elements: a magnifying lens icon, a palm tree and ocean waves.
The customer reacted positively to this logo design though he felt it could be improved upon by increasing its size and prominence.
We updated the logo accordingly and added a border to meet the customer's wishes.
Not quite satisfied with the logo, the customer asked us to remove the palm tree from the logo. Our designer was displeased as he felt that the palm tree was the key element of the design. Unfortunately, we were unable to convince the customer to retain the palm tree and thus removed it from the design.
Subsequently, the client approved all of our designers' graphics and we started making HTML templates for the site.
